Dr. Minadeo-Fox offers periodontal treatments for patients suffering from gum disease. Did you know that approximately 80% of the American population suffers from some degree of periodontal infection? Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the gums and jawbones caused by the colonization of bacteria underneath the tartar on your teeth.

Recent studies indicate that the effects of periodontal disease extend beyond your teeth and gums—scientists have now linked it to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, premature births and low birth weight. Often there are no noticeable symptoms of periodontal disease until it is in an advanced phase. Only trained dental professionals, like the caring and compassionate team at our holistic dental practice, can detect this disease in its early stages.

An article in the Journal of Periodontology outlined the associations between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis. After receiving treatment for periodontal infections, study participants saw improvement in their rheumatoid arthritis. One study found people who have uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease. Gum disease also increases blood sugar, so diabetics endure higher risks for complications. And the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health determined that patients diagnosed with gum disease were 63% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer.

In keeping with our overall mission as providers of comprehensive holistic care, our dental professionals take a proactive and comprehensive approach to periodontal therapy by providing the following services:

Charting and Diagnostic Services: We will record every detail about each tooth in your mouth and the health of the gum that surrounds it. This includes the tooth’s mobility, gum recession, bleeding upon probing.

Thorough Gum Examination: To ensure a healthy mouth, healthy gums are paramount. To assess the dental health of your gum tissues, our periodontal examination includes a through probing of the crevice around the tooth called the sulcus. Along with the 6 detailed measurements taken around each tooth, recession and  loss of tissue around each tooth are also recorded. Each exam is carefully compared to the prior visit.

Advanced Gum Therapy: Gum disease and infection left untreated, after being diagnosed, will result in tooth loss. Without strong healthy teeth, you are less likely to chew your food and absorb nutrients you need. The greatest risk to your health is the infection gum disease causes. As the infection progresses, it releases toxins into your bloodstream which can lead to very serious health issues. At the office of Dr. Minadeo-Fox, highly effective, non-surgical gum treatments are available to treat your gum disease. The key is early detection and prevention. It is critical to treat gum disease early because the tissue that is destroyed unfortunately cannot be restored. Along with proper home care and regular dental cleanings, these therapeutic treatments may also be recommended:

• Perio Protect Tray: Dr. Minadeo-Fox is an advocate of whole body health and understands that good health starts with a healthy mouth. Unhealthy gums can place you at risk for developing various systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pre-term labor as well as auto-immune and inflammatory disease. By improving your gum or periodontal health we are able to reduce the negative impact of the illness on your body. Dr. Minadeo-Fox uses leading edge technology in her hygiene department that can help patients avoid painful scraping and gum surgery with a more conservative treatment such as perio protect.

Perio Protect is a prescription tray that is custom made to fit over your teeth. This tray is uniquely designed to deliver medication and oxygen into the diseased gum pockets around your teeth where harmful bacterial live causing a chronic infection in your mouth. The combination results in a beneficial therapeutic effect of destroying the bacteria which are ausing an inflammatory response in your oral cavity and posing a risk to your whole system. With compliance patient response to treatment occurs quickly, inflammation subsides and a healing environment is promoted allowing the body to heal itself.

The goal of the Perio Protect Method is to intervene at the earliest stage of disease and to reduce, whenever possible the need for invasive procedures and the risk of bacteremia associate with the mechanical intervention.

• Antibiotic (Arestin) Therapy: After gum tissue becomes infected by harmful bacteria the attachment of the gum tissue gets destroyed. This results in a deep pocket around the tooth where more harmful bacteria can grow, causing more damage. Deep pockets around the tooth respond well to treatment with localized antibiotics specialized for curing this infection. Our hygienist will strategically place the antibiotic in infected areas where they adhere to the diseased pocket to kill bacteria though time released technology. Once the bacterial are eliminated the deep pocket becomes healthier and often easier to clean.

• Nutraceuticals: In order to achieve enhanced, long lasting, oral wellness and longevity of dental treatment,  a systemic (nutritional )support may also be recommended as part of the “home care” program. Over time it has become evident that oxidative stress, high cell turnover and poor nutrition are major issues contributing to periodontal disease. In addition, the nutritional needs of the oral cavity increase when recovering from dental treatment. So in order to maintain good oral health, Dr. Minadeo-Fox and her hygienist may recommend a dental nutraceutical.

Continued Care: During follow up visits we will do a re-evaluation to maintain the health of your gums.

Patient education: Because the importance of controlling and stopping Periodontal Disease, each follow up visit is critical in evaluating your progress or additional needs.
