Distress vs. De-stress
In its Stress in America survey, the American Psychological Association says that adults are reporting high levels of stress—and that their stress has increased over the last year. The American Institute of Stress states that 80% of workers feel stress on the job and nearly half claim they need help in managing their stress levels.

Chronic stress is the result of your body experiencing stressors with such frequency, there’s not enough time to activate the relaxation response. In short, you’re constantly in “fight or flight,” which is only meant to be a short-term bodily response used to deal with direct and imminent danger. Now, imagine walking around all day every day in that mode! Chronic stress affects your health in very detrimental ways. For example, excess stress can give you a headache or stomachache. And it certainly affects your oral health. A few ways stress impacts your dental wellbeing include:

  • Developing canker and cold sores
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Creating issues with jaw joints (TMJ)
  • Neglecting oral hygiene
  • Dealing with dry mouth
  • Eating unhealthily
  • Getting gum disease (or making gum disease worse)
  • Abusing unhealthy stress relievers such as drinking alcohol or smoking

Dr. Minadeo-Fox and her dedicated team can guide you through the best ways to go from distress to de-stress. When you use effective coping strategies for your stress, you’ll not only improve your dental health, but also your overall health, too. At our holistic dental practice, we endeavor to help our patients to breathe, relax, and de-stress with the following wellness services:

  • Receive a complimentary 10-20 minute upper body massage from our massage therapist before or after your appointment. We also offer additional massage options for a fee.
  • Reflexology uses pressure points in your feet to increase energy flow to your organs and revitalize your body.
  • Aromatherapy uses the scents of natural plant oils to trigger relaxation and calm your mood. Aromatherapy offers both mental and physical benefits. We can infuse eye pillows, neck pillows, and your treatment bib with these essential oils. Pleasant scents will smooth away tension and enhance your mood.
  • Our complimentary-to-use cervical neck pillows align and cushion your neck, allowing tension to drain. And the addition of aromatics and heat will soothe aching muscles and relax you even more.
  • During your appointment, we’ll cover you with a cozy blanket that offers warmth and comfort.
  • Paraffin hand treatments moisturize and soothe your tired hands, alleviating dry skin and joint pain.
  • We finish your treatment by offering a lightly scented, warm face towel.

For patients who have heart conditions or who feel anxious about their treatments, our stress-reduction techniques and products can soothe your anxieties and make you feel completely at ease. Massage, in particular, has been shown to reduce anxiety levels, calm the nervous system, increase blood circulation, and reduce stress.

Dr. Minadeo-Fox recommends that our patients incorporate stress-reduction techniques into their daily lives, along with creating healthy eating and oral hygiene habits.
